Coachella is more than just a music festival. It has become a cultural event where art and music come together to create an immersive experience. The festival’s art installations have grown into a defining feature, drawing visitors not only for the performances but also for the visual and interactive art that shapes the festival’s atmosphere. These installations, created in collaboration with world-renowned artists and designers, transform the festival grounds into a dynamic space that invites exploration and reflection. (Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, 2025) Behind each artwork lies a clear creative intention: many artists aim to challenge perceptions, foster a sense of community, or respond to the desert’s unique landscape. Some installations focus on themes such as transformation, ephemerality, and connection, offering visitors not just visual impact but also the chance to consider deeper questions about art, place, and human interaction. (Piñeiro, 2025)

In this post, we journey through the ways Coachella’s art installations elevate the festival, revisit unforgettable creations from previous years, and peek into the future with the much-anticipated 2026 edition starring Justin Bieber.

How Art Shapes the Coachella Experience

At Coachella, art installations are far more than mere decorations. They become beacons, gathering spots, and wells of inspiration. Organisers team up with artists who dream big and push creative boundaries, introducing daring designs that redefine what festival art can be. Many of these pieces invite hands-on interaction, drawing attendees into a world where they can connect both physically and emotionally.

Towering sculptures, immersive worlds, and dazzling light art add new dimensions to Coachella, transforming it into more than just a music event. These installations invite moments of awe and reflection, giving festival-goers fresh ways to experience creativity. By weaving art and music together, Coachella offers a multi-sensory adventure that sets it apart from any other festival. (Vankin, 2016)

Collaborations with World-Renowned Artists and Designers

Coachella partners with trailblazers in contemporary art and design, infusing the festival with fresh vision and innovative techniques. Many artists craft site-specific pieces that echo the desert’s spirit and the festival’s vibrant pulse.

For example, in 2018, artist Refik Anadol presented “WDCH Dreams,” a digital installation that transformed the iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall into a canvas of light and motion. While this work was not featured at Coachella, Anadol’s pioneering approach to digital media and immersive environments has inspired several Coachella installations that use large-scale projections and interactive digital elements. Artists and designers at Coachella have drawn on his techniques to create transformative spaces where festival-goers can engage directly with technology-driven art, making the connection between his visionary style and the festival’s expanding use of digital and sensory experiences clear.

In 2019, the festival featured “The Spectra” by artist Po Shu Wang, a towering sculpture made of reflective materials that played with light and shadow. This installation invited attendees to walk through and experience shifting perspectives, symbolising the festival’s theme of transformation.

These creative partnerships showcase Coachella’s drive to break new ground, blending the latest art trends and technology into unforgettable installations. Recent years have seen the rise of influential movements such as immersive environments, interactive light art, and large-scale participatory sculptures. These trends emphasize audience engagement, sensory experience, and the seamless integration of digital media with physical spaces. By incorporating these approaches, Coachella remains at the forefront of contemporary festival art. (Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, 2026)

Notable Installations from Past Years and Their Impact

Some installations have etched themselves into festival-goers’ memories, becoming enduring icons of Coachella’s artistic spirit.

● “Desert X” (2017): This series of site-specific sculptures and installations spread across the festival grounds, created by various artists. It encouraged attendees to explore the desert landscape and discover hidden artworks, blending natural and human-made elements.

● “The Portal” (2016): Designed by artist Jen Lewin, this interactive light installation featured large circular pads that lit up when stepped on. It created a playful environment that encouraged social interaction and movement, thereby enhancing the festival’s communal spirit.

● “The Giant Mirror Ball” (2015): A massive disco ball sculpture that reflected sunlight and created dazzling light effects. It became a popular photo spot and symbolised the festival’s celebration of music and dance culture.

These works did more than beautify the grounds; they transformed how people moved through and felt within the festival. Each piece sparked surprise and delight, inviting attendees to pause, look more closely, and savour the creativity around them. (Biller, 2016)

Festival-goers often engage with the installations by walking through, touching, or even climbing on certain pieces, experiencing the art from multiple perspectives. Many installations encourage social interaction, with visitors gathering around them for conversation, spontaneous dance, or reflection. (Variety, 2019) This dynamic participation not only deepens personal engagement but also builds a sense of shared discovery, making the art a focal point for community and collective experience throughout Coachella. (Florian, 2023)

How Art and Music Intertwine at Coachella

At Coachella, music and art are woven together in a seamless tapestry. Installations often echo the rhythms of live performances, building an atmosphere that dazzles every sense. Light sculptures pulse in time with the music, amplifying the emotional highs of each show.

The festival’s design guides visitors on a journey between stages and art spaces, immersing them in a flowing blend of sound and sight. This harmony creates a one-of-a-kind setting where the pulse of live music meets the thoughtful beauty of art.

Artists often find inspiration in the festival’s music, crafting installations that mirror its themes and moods. This creative conversation between art and sound enriches the festival, turning Coachella into a playground where imagination flourishes.

Looking Ahead to Coachella 2026 with Justin Bieber

The 2026 Coachella festival is set to carry forward its legacy of artistic innovation. With Justin Bieber leading the lineup, a vibrant, diverse crowd will gather, hungry for electrifying music and captivating art. (Franko, 2025)

Organisers are teasing groundbreaking new installations that will harness emerging technologies, including augmented reality and immersive environments. For example, attendees may engage with interactive AR apps on their smartphones to unlock hidden layers of digital art across the festival grounds. Projection mapping will transform physical sculptures and stages with moving visuals, while advanced light and sound systems will respond in real time to crowd movement and music. These innovations are designed to forge even deeper bonds between festival-goers and the vibrant world of Coachella. (Desert X 2025 review: a new American dream grows in the Coachella Valley, 2025)

Attendees can look forward to installations that do more than decorate—they will become key players in the festival’s unfolding story. Collaborations between artists and designers are set to capture Bieber’s influence and the shifting cultural scene, unveiling new ways to experience art and music together. (Franko, 2025)

Sabine Marcelis and MAZE

Sabine Marcelis will make her Coachella debut with Maze in April 2026.

Maze invites festivalgoers to wander, slow down, and take refuge. Inspired by the natural contours of the Coachella Valley, its curved PVC forms rise in varying heights and shift in colour from pale yellow at the perimeter to deep red at the core. The result is a gradient terrain of gentle volumes that filter light and sound by day and provide shaded pockets for rest and reflection. Clearings offer framed glimpses toward the stages, while seating along the outer edges provides relaxing vantage points for watching performances.

At night, the installation becomes an illuminated oasis: the inflated structures glow from within, turning the maze into a warm, radiant landscape.

Throughout, Marcelis’ signature themes are woven into the experience: light as a tangible material, playful transparency, bold silhouettes, and a sensory focus that foregrounds touch, atmosphere, and emotion. Marcelis is known for her innovative use of translucent materials and her playful investigations of how light interacts with surfaces, as seen in her previous works like the “No Fear of Glass” installation at the Fondation d’entreprise Martell and her luminous resin furniture collections. Her artistic philosophy centers on transforming ordinary moments into extraordinary visual and tactile experiences, often encouraging viewers to slow down and notice subtle shifts in colour, light, and texture. (Ribbens, 2016) Maze draws directly from these ideas, translating her ongoing fascination with sensory environments into an immersive installation shaped by the spirit of Coachella.

Art installations are now woven into the very fabric of Coachella, turning it from a collection of concerts into a vibrant cultural celebration. Through partnerships with acclaimed artists and designers, the festival crafts spaces that spark inspiration, foster connection, and ignite curiosity. As 2026 approaches, the ever-evolving blend of art and music promises to deliver fresh moments of awe for everyone who attends.
